WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE?
Datakey Electronics, Inc. -- Datakey, Inc. -- Safenet, Inc.
Datakey, Inc. was founded in 1976 to design, manufacture and market portable Electronic Memory Keys. In the early 1990’s, Datakey Inc. added smart cards to their portable memory line, eventually launching the world’s first FIPS-approved PKI high-security smartcard.
While the Memory Keys and Tokens business continued to be a solid base, as the 1990’s progressed, Datakey Inc. focused their business strategy on growing smart card / software solutions for enterprise information security. Ultimately, they decided to sell the original portable memory business.
In 2001, the assets of the Electronic Products division of Datakey, Inc. were sold to Datakey Electronics, Inc. , a private corporation. Datakey Electronics, Inc. still designs, manufactures, and supports the Memory Key & Token products described throughout this website. Since its formation in 2001, Datakey Electronics, Inc. has consistently grown through a focus on providing excellent technical and logistic support to its customers and by introducing innovative new products.
In 2004, SafeNet, Inc. acquired all of the shares of Datakey Inc. through a merger. Former Datakey Inc. smart card products, smart keys, and PKI information security infrastructure software products are sold and supported by SafeNet, Inc.
